Obituary

BUXTON – Alfred “Larry” Lee Burris, 89, passed away peacefully at his home on January 26, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He met a long and courageous battle with kidney disease with the same strength, dignity, and quiet determination that defined his life.
Born in Tipton, Missouri, on March 31, 1936, Larry was the son of the late Lillian (Mosby) Burris and Manual Lee Burris. He attended Hubbard High School, where he served as vice president of his class and excelled in athletics, lettering in football at center and playing shortstop in baseball.
In 1956, Larry proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on the USS Saipan (CVL-48). After completing his international service, the ship was decommissioned in 1957, and he transferred to Brunswick Naval Air Station. He received an honorable discharge in 1960. His service was a personal honor, shown by his customized Navy cap and the gratitude he received from others.
Larry moved to Buxton in 1980, where he met the love of his life, Dale Reynolds. The two married in 1984 and built a life filled with partnership, laughter, and community.
He retired in 1999 after over 30 years at Metro Bus Company, earning several honors such as "Man of the Year." Even after retiring, he drove for tour and charter companies before becoming a certified funeral attendant at Chad Poitras Cremation and Funeral Services in 2014.
Larry valued family, friends and service. He attended the 1963 March in Washington with groups such as the NAACP and witnessed Dr. King up close. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion.
Larry became a Master Mason at Buxton Masonic Lodge #115 in 1990, later becoming a member of the Shriners at Kora Shrine Temple. He joined the Shrine Cycle Corps. In 2010, Larry became the Chief Aide to the Potentate. In 2015, he was honored with the title of Emeritus Chief Aide, a reflection of his years of service, camaraderie, and the countless friendships he forged through his wit, humor, and unwavering commitment.
Larry had a lifelong love of cars. Known as “Big Daddy Larry,” he raced late-model cars at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway from 1968 to 1978. He never won, but gained fans, stories, and memorable experiences.
People will remember Larry for his unforgettable presence, the way he could brighten any room, and his remarkable sense of humor. His absence will leave a lasting impact.
He is predeceased by his sisters, Peggy, Ernestine, and Hope, as well as a stepdaughter, Tina Smith. His sister Etta passed away days after Larry. He leaves behind his loving wife, Dale; his children Debbie, Alfred Jr., and Lillian Burris; his grandchildren Mason (Jimbo), Shane (Dudlo), Alicia, and Regina; and his great-grandchildren Ava, Liam, and Alan (BamBam) and a large extended family in Missouri.
A graveside service with Military and Masonic Honors will be held on Saturday, May 30th at 11 AM at South Buxton Cemetery.
