
SALEM- Charles W. Phelps, 75, husband of Katherine M. (Murray) Phelps, of Salem, died Monday afternoon September 2, 2002, in the Salem Hospital after being stricken at his home.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Charles A. And Olive (Walton) Phelps.
Prior to his retirement in 1989, he was employed for 39 years by GTE Sylvania. He was a production and inventory control manager and worked at various plants on the north shore. Mr Phelps was a member of the GTE Sylvania Quarter Century Club.
He was a Navy veteran of WWII.
A lifelong resident of Salem, Mr. Phelps was a graduate of Salem High School in 1945 and the University of Massachusetts in 1950. He was a member of the First Universalist Church and the Essex Lodge, AF & AM, in Salem.
Besides his wife, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John “Jethro” M. and Maureen Phelps of Beverly, one daughter, Susan M. Khoury of Madison Alabama and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Leslie A. Phelps.
His funeral service will be held Thursday evening, September 5, 2002, at 6 pm in the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Thursday prior to the service, from 4 to 5:45 pm.
