ANDOVER - Bernard B. Von kahle, 89, a WWII veteran and trotting race pony owner, died
Sunday, August 27, at his Haverhill apartment after a long period of declining health. He was the
husband of Nellie P. (Marchulaitis) Von Kahle, who died April 7, 2003.
He was born in Canada, August 22, 1917, a son of the late Herman and Buelah (LeGeyette) Von
Kahle. He was raised in Athol, Mass, but had lived in Andover the greater part of his life. He had
resided in Haverhill for the last 3 years.
During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army, and served in the European Theater.
He worked as a truck driver for Standard Box company in Chelsea, and later, worked as a bus
driver for the City Of Boston’s school department.
During his lifetime, he owned many race ponies and competed throughout New England and New
York. He was a member of the Bay State Pacing and Trotting Association.
He is survived by four children, Bernard Von Kahle Jr. and his wife Irene (Gould) of No.
Reading, Ronald Von Kahle and his wife Deborah (Jayroe) of Strafford, NH, Joan Spears and her
husband Robert of Lexington, Katherine Deslauriers and her husband Raymond of Tyngsboro;
nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late Paul, Herman, Vance, Kermit, and Omar Von Kahle, Tina
DeJesus, and Theresa Becker.
His funeral service will be held Wednesday evening, Aug 30, at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Following cremation, interment will be in Mt. Benedict Cemetery, Boston. In lieu of flowers,
memorials to Rosie’s Place, 889 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA 02118 will be appreciated.
