Dr. David Zax, D.M.D., a longtime respected Boston dentist died on August 22, 2006 at the Faulkner Hospital in West Roxbury. He was 86 years old.
Born in Boston on December 14, 1919 the son of the late Hyman and Rose (Greenberg) Zax, Dr. Zax was raised in Boston and attended the Boston Schools. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the Boston University College of Liberal Arts, his Master's degree from the Boston University School of Education, and his Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Zax enlisted in the United States Army on June 24, 1941 in Boston and served with the 184th General Hospital Medical Corp throughout World War II. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon. Dr. Zax was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant on November 1, 1945 at Ft. Devens, MA. Upon returning from war, Dr. Zax established himself as a dentist in Boston, earning the admiration and respect of patients and colleagues throught his years in practice. He will always be remember as a kind and gentle man who was loved by his family and all that had the pleasure of knowing him.
Dr. Zax was predeceased by his twin brother, Samuel Zax of Hull and Florida.
Survivors include his beloved sister and loving brother-in-law, Shirley Zax-Sack and Albert Sack of North Carolina. He was the cherished uncle of Donna and David Gosman of Newton, Deborah and Ken Friedman of North Carolina, Jeff and Joyce Zax-Omansky of Hull, Susan Zax of Scituate, and Michael and Susan Zax of Sharon. He was also the much adored great-uncle of Alyssa Gosman, Harrison Friedman, Jonathan and Joel Omansky, Alissa and Adam Zax.
Graveside funeral services will be held in the Cong. Beth Hamidrash Hagodol Crawford St. Synagogue Cemetery, 770 Baker St. West Roxbury on Thursday, August 24, 2006 at 1:00 PM. Rabbi Alan Turetz of Temple Emeth of Chestnut Hill will officiate.
Memorial observance will be held at the home of Donna and David Gosman through Thursday evening. Those wishing to remember Dr. Zax may do so through memorial contributions to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St. Boston, MA 02114.
