Obituary

Melvin Kagan, 83, a resident of Winthrop for over 50 years died on August 19, 2006 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Ostrog, Poland the son of the late Jacob and Pearl (Shapiro) Kagan, he was raised and educated there. A survivor of the Holocaust, Mr. Kagan emigrated to the United States from a displaced persons camp in Austria in 1949. He arrived at Ellis Island, New York aboard the ship “Marine Shark” accompanied by his sister Ann and her husband Jack Kornhauser. Mr. Kagan was the retired owner of the Washrette Laundry in Allston, Massachusetts.

The beloved husband of the late Mae (Feinstein) Kagan, he is survived by his children, Jeffrey Kagan of CA and Laurie Medrek and her husband Ted of Londonderry, New Hampshire; his grandchildren, Michelle, Michael, and Brian; his great-grandson, Evan; and his sisters Ann Kornhauser of Peabody (formerly of Everett) and Claire Erdman of Israel. He was the brother of the late Lazer Kagan.

Funeral services will be held in the Torf Funeral Chapel, 151 Washington Ave. (Cary Sq.) CHELSEA on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Rabbi Louis Rieser of the Etz Hayim Synagogue of Derry New Hampshire will officiate. Burial will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Memorial observance will be held at his late residence following the interment until 8:00 PM and on Wednesday at the home of Laurie and Ted Medrek from 5-8 PM. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Holocaust Center of the North Shore, 76 Lake St. Peabody, MA 01960.
