Mary W. Atkinson, 80, of Sudbury, MA, died peacefully at home on March 28, 2025, following a diagnosis of bladder cancer. Her niece and nephew were by her side.
Born on November 26, 1944, Mary spent many years in Brookline before moving to Sudbury, where she embraced a peaceful, happy and engaged retirement after a long and successful career as an executive in Assisted Living. Though she had reached her eighth decade, Mary remained energetic, active, clear-minded, and spry. She made the most of her later years—cultivating her vegetable and flower gardens, swimming, reading, and volunteering in the community.
Mary had a natural empathy and warmth that drew people to her. A thoughtful and lively conversationalist, she was as kind as she was perceptive. She was deeply committed to dog welfare and environmental causes, volunteering with Save A Dog and playing an active role in Sustainable Sudbury. She also participated in regular bread delivery efforts to local homeless shelters.
Over the years, Mary lovingly adopted many shelter dogs, most recently her sweet-natured Doberman, Mischa, who survives her, and Brady, a handsome dachshund who passed away just a week before Mary herself.
She is survived by her brothers, Robert and Richard Atkinson, and was predeceased by her sister Jean, with whom she shared a close and enduring bond.
In accordance with her wishes, Mary was cremated. A memorial gathering will be scheduled at a later date. Those who wish to honor her memory may consider a contribution to Save A Dog or Sustainable Sudbury.
