Obituary

Maureen Elizabeth Pitcher, 77
11-21-47-4-10-25

Buxton-Maureen Elizabeth Pitcher, 77 passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025, after courageously battling liver cancer. She was also a two-time warrior and survivor of breast cancer. She was born November 21, 1947, to parents James and Miriam Pitcher of Boothbay Harbor.

She attended Boothbay Region High School and graduated in 1965. Soon after graduation, she moved to Portland and began working for Fairchild Semiconductor, which later became National Semiconductor. She retired in 2014 at the age of 66.

Maureen’s mother Miriam lived with her for most of her life. They had a very strong mother-daughter relationship. They spent time together shopping, watching soap operas and television shows and in the summer, they enjoyed taking day trips and traveling to different destinations in New Hampshire. Together, they also shared a love of cats and they always had bowls on their porch full of Tender Vittles for them. One beloved stray cat named Matty in which they took in, was with them for almost 20 years. Later on they had a beautiful Maine Coon cat named Danny that they rescued from an animal shelter. Most recently, Maureen took in a hungry Siamese neighborhood cat named Mr. B.

Maureen loved Elvis Presley and attempted to make her dream of seeing him come true when she got tickets for his 1977 tour. She had two tickets for his Cumberland County Civic Center show dated 8/17/77. Sadly, he died on 8/16/77, which was such a sad and disappointing day for such a dedicated and loyal fan since she waited her entire life to see him. She always loved the oldies and enjoyed bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Beatles. One of her favorite songs was Old Time Rock & Roll by Bob Seger. She also enjoyed watching many TV shows, TV series, and movies through streaming services. In the distant past, Dallas was a favorite of hers. She most recently enjoyed watching home shows on HGTV and the series Game of Thrones. Through the years, she loved doing puzzles, gardening and having beautiful hanging outdoor plants on her patio. She cherished the holidays and found great joy in decorating for Christmas. With a love for cooking, she would often be found in the kitchen preparing different recipes.

She was the most loving, caring, funny, unselfish, and giving person. Maureen loved her family more than life itself. She didn’t have any children of her own, but she took on a special motherly role with her nieces and her nephew. She was artistic and very book smart too; she enjoyed helping her great-nieces with elementary school homework assignments. She was like a grandmother to them and always found something fun to do when she babysat or visited them, whether it be playing board games, watching cartoons, playing with toys, or making special request meals and desserts like mac and cheese, rice pilaf and jello. She always attended all of their school plays, shows, sporting events, ceremonies and graduations. Also, she was just like a second mother to her niece Lori and nephew Terrence. She did everything in her power to make their lives better and happier. She generously supplied them with whatever they needed, always listening to their problems and teaching them important life lessons.

Soon after her mother Miriam went into a nursing home in her late 80’s, Maureen moved in with her sister Kathi in Buxton. Kathi had just lost her loving life partner Tim, to illness and she was battling pancreatic cancer. She cared for Kathi, even taking on the role as her nurse until she passed away from the disease in 2018. This loving care that she gave her sister was an example that Maureen was like a saint of sorts, rearranging her life to help others even as she was battling cancer herself.

‘Auntie’ as we all called her, will be dearly missed. She was one of a kind and no one will ever fill her void. She will always be remembered for her vibrant spirit and her unwavering love and support.

She is survived by her niece Lori Kenyon and her husband Doug of South Carolina; her nephew Terrence Smart of Buxton, three great-nieces Karissa Kenyon, Kaitlyn Kenyon and Kourtney Kenyon and a great-nephew Corbin Smart. She is predeceased by her mother Miriam Pitcher and her sister Kathleen (Kathi) Smart.

The burial will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service.

In Lieu of flowers, nothing could honor Maureen’s memory more than to have contributions made to: Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland P.O. Box 336, Westbrook ME 04098
