Obituary

Virginia "Pat" Smith
February 5, 1935 – April 9, 2025
BUXTON- Virginia (Pat) Smith, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 90.
Pat was born on February 5, 1935, in Averill Park, New York, to Virginia Parker Berrigan and Arthur Berrigan. She began her education in Pittstown, NY, before her family relocated to Saco, Maine, where she later graduated from Thornton Academy in 1953.
In 1954, Pat married the love of her life, Larry Smith. Together, they embarked on a life full of adventure and dedication. Military service took them to West Point, NY, and then to Hawaii, where their son, Larry Smith Jr., was born in 1957. After Larry's military service ended in 1959, the family returned to Saco, Maine, where they lived for 42 years before settling into retirement in Buxton, enjoying peaceful days by the lake.
Pat had a deep love for the outdoors and was happiest when surrounded by nature and her family. Whether it was fishing, hunting, hiking, motorcycling, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, or camping, Pat embraced every adventure. Her vibrant spirit and generosity extended into her community as well. She volunteered with the American Red Cross and Children’s Toy Box in Buxton, and she gave her time and love to the Buxton Animal Shelter. A proud member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Saco Fire Department, she also served as its President for a term.
Pat was predeceased by her beloved husband of 67 years, Larry Smith Sr., and their son, Larry Smith Jr. She was also preceded in death by her nephew Kevin Berrigan, and brothers-in-law Skip Ricker, Ray Smith, and Robert Smith.
She is survived by her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Sean Smith and his wife Trisha, and their daughters Hannah and Gabriella; Arlan Smith and his wife Cindy, and their children Charley, Cooper, and Chloe; and Allison Hockett and her husband Joe, and their daughters Zoe and Madison.
Pat is also survived by her brother Edward "Butch" Berrigan and his wife Chris, and their daughters Robin Berrigan and Rae Theriault (with husband Kirk and sons Lance and Tyler). She leaves behind her dear sisters-in-law Peggy Ricker, Noreen Smith, and Patsy Smith, along with extended family and many friends who will miss her dearly.
Pat's legacy is one of love, strength, adventure, and compassion—a life well lived and a heart that touched many.
