Obituary

Edward F. Hines Jr., 60, of Andover, a partner in the law firm of Hines & Corley LLC of Lexington and a former partner at Choate, Hall & Stewart of Boston, died Mon Aug. 14, 2006 at the Mass General Hospital in Boston, after a long illness.
Born in Norfolk, VA he was raised in Woburn. He graduated from Boston College High School, received his A.B. from Boston College in 1966 magna cum laude, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School 1969 cum laude. His professional practice focused on federal and state tax law, with primary emphasis on representing owners of closely held businesses and representing taxpayers in disputes with the Mass DOR. Highlights include representing General Electric Co. in its landmark victory against the Comm. of Mass; representing Bill Koch in the Supreme Judicial Court case that resulted in the largest individual income tax refund in the history of the Comm. of Mass and represented the family which owned Simplex Time Recorder Co. in the sale of the company to Tyco. During his years of practice in Boston, Mr. Hines served as President of the Boston Bar Assoc., President of the Boston Bar Foundation, the association’s charitable arm, and President of Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. (MCLE), the principal provider of continuing legal education programs for the Massachusetts bar. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Associated Industries of Massachusetts and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation. Mr. Hines has been a volunteer with the American Heart Assoc since 1971, serving as State Chairman in 1983 and as National Chairman in 1998. He currently serves as treasurer and as a Member of Board of Directors of the World Heart Federation in Geneva, Switzerland. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton and as Vice Chairman of the Board of the American College of Greece in Athens, Greece. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Boston Medical Center, Accion International in Charlestown, and the Catholic Charitable Bureau of the Archdiocese of Boston, Inc.
Mr. Hines was the recipient of the St. Ignatius of Loyola Award from Boston College High School, was a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and a frequent lecturer on tax law at the Federal Tax Institute of New England, MCLE Programs and other seminars and institutes.
He is survived by his wife Elaine (Carroll) Hines, his son Jonathan E. Hines of Marietta GA, his daughter Carolyn A. Hines of Scottsdale AZ, his mother Jeanne (Caufield) Hines of Woburn, and his brothers and sisters Mary Hines of Woburn, Ellen Carbeau of Burlington, Susan Maguire of Woburn, Dr. Thomas Hines M.D. of Arlington, and Stephen Hines of Reading. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was the son of the late Edward F. Hines Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thurs Aug 17 at 11:30 AM in St. Ignatius Church, 20 Commonwealth Ave. Chestnut Hill. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Woburn. Visiting hours will be in the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home 465 Centre St. Newton Corner on Wed from 2-4 & 6-9 PM.
