Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Thursday at 8 am. Funeral Mass in St. Edith Stein/St. Edward Parish at 9am. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 11:15 am. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8pm. Obituary
George F. Nowell died Saturday evening at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in E. Bridgewater and raised in Brockton, a son of the late Charles O. and Ellen C. (Borjesson) Nowell. He had attended Brockton Schools and left high school to join the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and the US Army during WW II. He served in the European Theatre with the 2nd Armored Division in France. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart as a result of injuries received during the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from the US Post Office in Brockton and previously he had been a machinist in local machine shops, including United Steel Mold. He was a member of the DAV and of the Amateur Ham Radio Operators Club in Bridgewater. He enjoyed all kinds of gardening, playing cribbage and solving crossword puzzles. He was most proud of receiving his high school diploma several years ago at a ceremony at Brockton High School for WW II veterans who left school to enlist.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloria E. (Salvatore) Nowell, a son Ken F. Nowell, Fall River Police Dept. and Jane Campion both of Taunton, a daughter, Linda J. Grilli and her husband Alfred J. of Plymouth, three grandchildren, Antonio L. Nowell, Angela O. Nowell and Nicola S. Nowell, a sister Mary Donovan of Brockton, many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Charles, Joseph and Paul Nowell, Helen Hicks, Margaret Crone, Beatrice Barry and Rita Nowell.
