Obituary

Richard I Burden Jr. passed away on Friday, March 28th in Anderson, IN surrounded by his wife and children.

He was born in Greenville, Ohio on November 13th, 1950. Richard graduated from Manchester College, North Manchester, IN and earned a Masters Certificate in Rehabilitation Services from DePaul University in Chicago.

Richard married Sharon Browning in South Bend, IN on November 12th, 1983. They resided in the South Bend/Mishawaka area for many years until relocating to Anderson, IN in the spring of 2024.

He was employed in Rehabilitation Services at Goodwill Industries for ten years until he became the Executive Director of IN*Source (formerly Task Force on Education for the Handicapped.) He served in that capacity for 32 years before retiring in 2017. Over the years, he received various awards from local and national organizations for his advocacy for parents and students with disabilities.

After retirement, he found enjoyment in woodworking and furniture making but nothing brought him more joy than being “Pop Pop” to his 4 grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his wife, Sharon. Their children: Caitlin (Ben) Sherman and their children Maxwell, Oliver and Magnolia of Fortville, IN. Jacob (Alexandra) Burden and their son Miles of Chicago, IL. Samuel Burden of Indianapolis and Anna Burden (Mallory Chamberlin) of Indianapolis. His three sisters Karen (William) Wagner, Janet (Roger) Falcinelli both of Greenville, OH and Linda (Roger) Swallow of Union City, OH along with two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Joan Burden, and a son, Joseph Patrick Burden.
