Obituary

Barbara Ann (Doyle) Herlihy-Chevalier, RN, MSN, of Hudson NH formerly of Tewksbury, Andover MA and Hampton NH, passed away March 23, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Timothy J. Herlihy and the late Robert J. Chevalier.

She was born in Cambridge, MA to the late Dr. William A. and Aloyse V. (Mahoney) Doyle. Barbara attended Elementary and Junior High School in Andover, MA and graduated as Valedictorian at Hampton Academy in NH. A graduate of the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, she became a Registered Nurse and later earned her Bachelor of Science degree at NH College (now Southern NH University) and her Master of Science in Nursing at Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA.

After graduation from MGH, Barbara did private duty nursing in several of the Boston Hospitals and happily assumed the role of wife and mother at home for ten years while her children were young She resumed her nursing in a charge nurse capacity at Tewksbury Hospital and Lowell Adult Day Treatment Center. She retired as a Community Mental Health Nurse from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Region 3, located at Danvers State Hospital and in the Greater Lawrence Community.

As an advocate for wellness in the elderly and psychiatric populations, Barbara developed a passion for Remotivation Therapy and attained certification in Basic, Advanced, and Instructor status through the National Remotivation Therapy Organization and the Bay State Remotivation Council. In addition to conducting Remotivation groups with patients, Barbara taught staff in facilities throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. She served as President of both organizations and was a member of an International Advisory Council and members from Canada, Australia, and the United States. Barbara was a proud member of Marquis Who’s Who, for her roles in Nursing.

Known as “Grandmommy” to all of her grandchildren, her happiest times were at gatherings with all of her family. An avid reader, she also loved to travel, which included cruises and time spent in many of the United States, the Canadian Provinces, and a trip to Ireland where she stood on the homelands of her maternal grandparents.

Barbara is survived by her seven children: Michael K. Herlihy and his wife, Betty, Ann-Marie Choiniere and her husband Alan, Sharon D’Urso and her husband Ron, Ellen Maclaren, Stephen G. Herlihy, Kathleen Sullivan and her husband John, and James Herlihy and his wife Patricia. She also leaves her grandchildren; Tim and Jaclyn Herlihy, Jeffrey and Brianna Herlihy, Vanessa and Robert Onessimo, Lauren and Greg Stevens, Joseph D’Urso and Bert Utsey, Jessica and James Bancroft, Amanda Herlihy, Shawn Sullivan, and Kayla Maclaren, along with great grandchildren: Cora, Avery and Emelaine Herlihy, Xander and Charlee Herlihy, Conner and Riley Onessimo, Molly and Declan Stevens, James and Brooklyn Bancroft. She is also survived by her step-son Ron Chevalier and his daughter Sherre Chevalier and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was pre-deceased by her sister, Jacquelyn (Doyle) Thomas-Browning, her God-Mother, Rita C. Doyle, her first grandson, Justin Alan Choiniere, son-in-law, Daren Maclaren and great-grandson Wesley Ryver Herlihy-Sparks.

Calling hours are Sunday, March 30th, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Her funeral procession will begin on Monday, March 31st at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 198 Haggetts Pond Rd., Andover MA. Services will conclude with interment at St. Mary Cemetery, 90 River Road, in Tewksbury.
