Rita Abrams Sherman was born Rita Betty Abrams on July 4,
1942, in Brooklyn, NY. She was the daughter of Herman Abrams
and Pauline Abrams (Lieberman), and sister to Larry Abrams.
She had a head of red curly hair, with green eyes and freckles
and was always the tallest kid in school. At age 14, the family
moved to Roslyn Heights, NY.
Rita attended the Wheatley School where she graduated a year
early. She then attended Hofstra College where she received an
associate’s degree and was married in 1961. Rita had two
daughters, Polly Ann Cacurak (Sherman) who was born in Des
Moines Iowa in 1964. While in Des Moines, she received her
bachelor’s degree from Drake University while teaching second
grade. She moved to Philadelphia in 1965 and then settled in
Spring Valley, New York where her second daughter Amy Jill
Greenstein (Sherman) was born in 1967.
She was divorced in 1975 and met her life partner Gary Lotto in
1977. Rita graduated with her master’s degree in social work in
1978 from Fordham University. She held various positions in the
social work field as both a licensed Social Worker and an
Administrator until her retirement. Rita and Gary moved to Mount
Kisco, NY in 1988 where they own a home together and resided
until her passing.
Besides her 2 daughters, she left behind 4 beautiful
grandchildren, Emily Romansky (Greenstein), Nicole Jobe
(Cacurak), Eric Greenstein and Samantha Cacurak. Rita also
adored Gary’s 3 children, Ben Lotto, Gail Karlovsky (Lotto) and
Jerry Lotto as well as their children and grandchildren. She was
treasured and will be missed by all.
Being born on July 4 th , Rita became a real firecracker. She was
self-sufficient in every way and stubborn; always dug her heels in
until the very end. She died on her own terms, at home
surrounded by her loved ones.
