Charles Robert Carter, 98, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, March 9, 2025 following a long, eventful life.
“Charlie” was born in Tewksbury, Massachusetts on March 23, 1926 to John P. Carter and Margaret Florence (Doucette) Carter.
He graduated from Tewksbury High School.
He and his wife of 70 years, Sarah Mildred “Middy” (Edwinson) Carter, moved to Englewood, Florida in the eighties, where they lived and enjoyed the rest of their lives.
Out of high school, Charlie joined the United States Army during World War II. He proudly served his country and was awarded a Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Charlie may have best been known for his family’s business, F.I. Carter and Sons, established by his grandfather. Charlie ran the company for many years and was responsible for many labor-saving innovations. He had many long-term employees
who often became life-long friends.
He was also known for his countless hours of volunteerism. He served as a member of most, but often as an officer of many benevolent groups such as the Masons, Shriners, local food pantries, water commissioner, cemetery commissioner, past Commodore and lifetime member of the Tewksbury Veterans Association, Girl Scouts trip chaperones in 1972, 23-gallon blood donor, 28-years with the Englewood Methodist church pancake breakfast, and much more.
Charlie and Middy enjoyed many cruises, RV travels, long walks on Englewood Beach collecting shells and shark’s teeth, and in their younger days hosting parties.
Charlie is predeceased by the love of his life, Middy; his oldest son, Charles Robert Carter, Jr.; and siblings Helen, John, Frank, Priscilla, Richard, and Daniel.
He is survived by his three sons, Donald W. and Diane (Strasser), James E. and Patricia (Poisson), and Barry L. and Kathy Miller and Charles Jr’s wife Madonna (Fitzpatrick). He is also survived by grandchildren Charlene (Carter) Lundy and Lori Hilton, Christopher and Jesse (Smart) Carter, Donald Carter and Jody Jordan, Kimberly (Carter) and Randy Caron, Adam Carter, Gregory and Christina (Conneely) Carter, Dawn (Carter) and Cutter Brown. Charlie is also survived by great-grandchildren Dustin Carter, Josephine and Oren Carter, Charlee Carter, Evelyn and Lillian Carter, and Covey and Makai Brown. He is also survived by one sibling, Pauline Bagby and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Friday, March 21st, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee Street, Tewksbury. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22nd, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery.
