STEPHEN J. ''STEVIE'' DOHERTY
March 06, 2025

Obituary

Stephen Joseph Doherty, affectionately known as “Stevie,” passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025, at the age of 84. A proud Charlestown native, Stevie spent the last 20 years living in Malden, MA, but his heart always remained in his beloved hometown. Born on September 12, 1940, in Boston, Stevie lived a life full of love, laughter, and loyalty, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Stevie was a true townie, from his early days spent with his cherished Grandpa Bill to his teenage years running with the Jokers. He was a man who loved his neighborhood, his friends, and most of all, his family. His infectious personality and quick wit made him the center of any gathering, and his love for storytelling always kept those around him entertained. Stevie was known for his colorful sense of style, and in his younger years, he set the latest fashion trends. In his later years, he was rarely seen without a scally cap and a townie sweatshirt.

One of Stevie’s trademarks was his Irish music, and he would often be spotted tooling around town in his little red car, which he drove barefoot with the windows down and his Irish music blaring. He wasn’t the best driver, but boy, was he a sight to see!
He was a loyal friend who lived life with an open heart, always ready to help, laugh, and live in the moment. His love for his Irish heritage was matched only by his love for his family. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his daughters and grandchildren, and he was filled with a pride that knew no bounds. He recently found even more joy in the role of great-grandfather.

Stevie’s curiosity and love of travel took him to many corners of the world, but his favorite places to relax were Key West and Provincetown. He was also a proud member of the International Laborers Union Local 223, working until the age of 80.

Stevie is predeceased by his parents, Alice (Norton) Doherty and Stephen Joseph Doherty, and his beloved grandfather, Bill Norton. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Carolyn (Howell) Doherty, his daughters, Kathleen Doherty Casey and her husband Thomas Casey, Christine Doherty Fronduto and her husband Nicholas Fronduto, and Linda Doherty Conway and her husband Richard Douglass, and Kelli Flanagan. He leaves behind five grandchildren—Stephanie, Patrick and Matthew Fronduto, Sydney Conway, and Bridget Casey—and his precious great-granddaughter, Amelia. Stevie is also survived by his sister, Mary Doherty Hudson and her husband Glen, his sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Barbara (Howell) Crooker, and her late husband (his best friend) Doug Crooker, as well as their children Carolyn, Cheryl, John, Paul, and his late namesake Stephen, along with their families.

Stevie’s legacy will live on through his family, friends, and the countless stories that will continue to be told in his honor. He was a man who knew how to live life to the fullest, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Rest in peace, Daddy. Your love, laughter, and light will live on forever.
