PEABODY: Susan Green Curtis, age 87, recently of Peabody, a former longtime Wilmington and Tewksbury resident, passed away peacefully after several months of declining health on Friday, February 28, 2025.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ivan on February 28, 2021.
Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on November 6, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert George Green and the late Elsie Maude Kelley Green.
Susan graduated from New Bedford High School in 1955 and went on to attend the New England Baptist School of Nursing where she became a registered nurse. Later in her life,
she graduated from Emmanuel College in Boston with a dual degree in Psychology and Theology. Afterward she graduated from Andover Newton Theological School with her Master of Divinity degree.
She was ordained a Deacon in the church of God on June 10, 1983.
Susan went on to serve the Memorial United Methodist Church in Beverly as well as The Tewksbury United Methodist Church before she retired. Whether as a nurse or a pastor, Susan dedicated her career to caring for others.
Susan and Ivan were married in New Bedford Massachusetts on October 16, 1958, and enjoyed 62 years of marriage. They initially lived in Keene, New Hampshire and then moved to Wilmington to raise their family.
Susan enjoyed music, especially singing and playing the piano and organ. In her retirement years, she gave piano lessons in her home to local children. She was also a very active member of the Wilmington United Methodist Church as well as Tewksbury Methodist Church and in her later years, St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal church in Wilmington. She loved to read the Bible and often participated and led Bible studies at church and at home. She also liked to draw and write and was in the process of writing a novel she began in her later years. Susan enjoyed canoeing, swimming, and birdwatching during many summers on Keewaydin Lake in Maine where she and Ivan had a summer cottage.
Susan was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend.
Susan leaves her daughter, Deborah Susan Pike and her husband Glenn of Essex, and her son David P. Curtis and his wife Karyn of Tewksbury. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Benjamin Pike of Essex, Jared Pike of New York City and Kathryn and Jason Curtis of Tewksbury.
Susan was predeceased by three siblings, George and Donald Green and A. Janet Green Treadup.
A memorial service will be held at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Chapel, 4 Forest Street, Wilmington on Saturday, June 21st at 11 a.m. Interment of Susan’s ashes will be at the Hillside Cemetery, Stoneham Maine during the upcoming summer.
