David “Laverne” Bennett, 74, of Vanceville, Georgia, passed away at home on March 5, 2025, of natural causes. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., March 8, 2025, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Joseph L. Crumley officiating. Laverne will be laid to rest at Omega Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 8, 2025, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service. The family will be gathering at the residence of Mike and Lauri Jo Bennett, 167 Elm Street, Norman Park, GA.
Laverne’s nephews, Travis Bennett, Mike Bennett, Hal Bennett, Jeff Lynch, Vaughn Bennett, Seth Bennett, Winston Bennett and Mark Bennett will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Camp, Eddie Dunn and Lamar Frazier.
He was born August 12, 1950, to Verna Lee McCrary and John David (J. D.) Bennett of Crosland, Georgia. After graduating from Norman Park High School, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserves. He retired from the Bechtel Corporation, where he worked as a Contract Construction/Safety Engineer. While working for the Bechtel Corporation, he traveled all over the United States and various countries, where he made lifelong friends, who he kept in touch with on a regular basis. He had traveled to all 50 states, except Hawaii. He was a member of the Masons and the Shriner’s, and a dedicated contributor to Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Laverne was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Jackie Bennett Lynch and Billy Joe Bennett. He was devoted to his family, and he was a very caring and giving man.
Laverne is survived by his children, Josh Bennett and Katrina Bennett (George) Bush; grandchildren, Kaya River Bennett and Tyson Bush; siblings Joy Imel, Jerry (Sandra) Bennett, Jane (Bobby) Nutt, Julian (Linda) Bennett, Tony (Mary) Bennett, Phyllis Bennett Dartlone, and John (Mona) Bennett; sister-in-law, Margie Bennett; and many nieces and nephews.
