Obituary

Robert (Bob) Joseph Kearney, 87, passed away peacefully from natural causes on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Linden Ponds in Hingham, MA.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 24, 1938, he was the son of the late John and Margaret (Gallagher) Kearney. Bob grew up on Adams Street in Dorchester with five siblings: Marie, Jack, Bernie, Eddie, and Peggy. He served four years in the Navy as a Seaman and then attended Boston State College, now UMass-Boston, from 1957 to 1961, graduating with a degree in Education.

For 35 years, Bob worked as an English teacher in the Boston school system, mostly at George Washington Carver Middle School in Roslindale. When not teaching, he loved to golf, spending many hours playing rounds at the Braintree Golf Course. After retiring in 1996, Bob continued to pursue a lower golf handicap while also traveling and helping care for his grandchildren, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was known for his easy-going personality, his constant dad-joke humor, smooth dance moves (most memorably dancing in his wheelchair at his daughter’s wedding), and his many karaoke appearances.

Bob was the husband of the late Eleanor (Sexton) Kearney for 45 years and the late Virginia (Lopes) Kearney for eight years. He is survived by his sister, Peggy (Kearney) Scecina of South Hadley, Massachusetts; his children and their spouses, Robert M. Kearney and Cindy (Ordway) Kearney of Rockland, Massachusetts, and Jennifer (Kearney) Harris and Greg Harris of Scituate, Massachusetts; and his grandchildren, Caitlin (Kearney) Knupp and her husband, Josh Knupp, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Cassidy N. Kearney of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Camden K. Harris, Grayden E. Harris, and Sumner G. Harris of Scituate, Massachusetts.

Family and friends are invited to attend Bob’s visiting hours on Wednesday, March 19th, from 9:00-10:00 AM at Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 at the rotary), Whitman. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 AM at Holy Ghost Church, 518 Washington Street, Whitman. Burial will follow at St. James Cemetery, Whitman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beacon Hospice, Plymouth, Massachusetts.
