Joan A. Strain, 91, formerly of Peach Blossom Lane in Greenville, passed away on Saturday February 22nd surrounded by her family in the Hulitar Hospice Intake Center, Providence. She was the wife of the late John L. “Bud” Strain. They had been married for 41 years.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Moran) Bohan. She had lived in Smithfield since 1966, previously living in Providence. She had been an executive assistant with Starkweather and Shepley in Providence and Fatima Hospital in North Providence before retiring in 1998.
Joan’s faith was very important to her, and she lived her life with her faith at the forefront of everything she did. She was an active communicant of St. Philip Church for over 50 years. Her grandchildren brought her the most joy, and she truly enjoyed her weekend dinners at the Club 44 and the Greenville Inn with Buddy by her side.
She leaves her children, Joanne M. Gibbons of North Smithfield, Kathleen J. Martel and her husband Mark of Cumberland and John L. Strain III and his wife Donna of West Warwick. She was the grandmother of Sean-Patrick O’Brien, John “Jake” Gibbons and his wife Kimberly, Allison Gibbons, Samantha Strain and Michael Strain. She was the mother-in-law of the late John Gibbons.
Her funeral will be held Saturday March 1st at 9:30am from the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Smithfield. Her burial will be in Highland Park, Johnston. Visitation Saturday 8-9:30am.
