Janet (Willand) McKernan passed away unexpectedly at home on February 21, 2025. Janet was predeceased by her loving husband Bernard F. McKernan who passed away on November 26, 2019. She was also predeceased by her brother James C. Willand.
Born in Worcester Massachusetts the daughter of John and Mary Willand of Millbury Ma. Janet was a graduate of Millbury High School where she was an outstanding athlete and honor student. She entered into the nursing program at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts. While training in the nursing program she met Bernie who stole her heart.
Janet and Bernie moved to Yonkers NY before returning to New England to raise their family. Living in Worcester, West Boylston, Longmeadow, Somers, CT, and their home of 26 years and their favorite place Chatham, Cape Cod before finally residing in Mansfield, Ma where they lived with her youngest daughter Kara and her husband Tom Griffin.
She loved shopping, cooking, entertaining, gardening, and Cape Cod. She loved anything chocolate, She loved to read and probably read a book or more a day. She loved to watch the Food Network and was always saving new recipes to try. She was a fan of all the New England Sports teams and would watch every game. Also, Janet and Bernie spent much time traveling off the Cape to attend their grandchildren’s sporting events, taking great pride in their grandchildren’s accomplishments.
Janet is survived by five children Brian and his wife Erin of Millbury, Kevin of West Boylston, Meg of Peabody, Mark and his wife Christine of Newburyport, and Kara and her husband Tom of Mansfield. Eleven Grandchildren Stephen and his wife Courtney, Patrick and his wife Kimberly, Kevin and his wife Vanessa, Alyssa and her husband Kevin, Kyle and his wife Molly, Ryan and his wife Alyssa, Hayley, Amanda and her husband Connor, Carly, Shannon and Kaitlyn. Eight Great Grandchildren Evie, Emma, Ellie, Ty, Kane, Raelynn, Hayes and Kennedy.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice in Janet’s memory.
