Sylvia Lynwood (Guerra) Costello, 79, of Brockton, MA passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, February 16, 2025. She was the beloved wife of John “Jay” Costello, with whom she shared 59 years of marriage, and the daughter of the late Sylvio Guerra and Althea Huddelston.
Sylvia, known affectionately as Mike to her friends and family, was the proud family matriarch and glue that held them together. She was raised throughout New England and Pennsylvania, moving frequently for her father’s career in construction.
She had fond memories of living both in Easton and Whitman and graduated from Whitman High School in 1963. Mike worked at Edgar’s Department Store in Brockton where she met her husband, and the couple set down roots in Brockton to raise their family. She worked for Carey's Bus Company for 18 years as a school bus driver. After her children graduated, she became an administrative assistant at Chadwick's of Boston and Aqua Leisure until retiring in 2015.
Mike will be remembered as a beloved wife, dedicated and affectionate mother, caring friend, supportive neighbor, pet
lover, bird watcher, avid reader of mystery and crime novels, and an exceptional hostess. Her kitchen was the hub for large holiday gatherings throughout the year for over five decades. She loved to cook and was known for her homemade tomato sauce that simmered all day every Sunday on the back of the stove, filling the house with its savory and tangy aroma.
Those who knew her will remember her not just for the warm meals she prepared, but for the warmth of her heart, her sharp wit, and playful sense of humor. Mike leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and cherished memories that will be forever held in the hearts of her family and friends.
In addition to her loving and doting husband Jay, she is survived by her children: Thomas Costello of Brockton, MA; and Susan (Costello) Alden and her husband, Wayne, of San Diego, CA. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret “Peggy” Dimery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to The Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org or the South Shore Humane Society at southshorehumane.org.
A burial Ceremony followed by a Celebration of Life will take place in the Spring.
