Obituary

LIMINGTON- William McKay II, affectionately known as Bill, Billy or "little Bill", passed away unexpectedly on February 16, 2025, in Limington, Maine, at the age of 37. Born on May 19, 1987, in Portland, Maine, Bill lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and love.

As sixth-generation Maine lobsterman, Bill carried on a proud family tradition. He began his career fishing out of Cape Porpoise before relocating to Portland Harbor. The ocean was his second home — its rhythm and vastness mirroring his own free spirit. Whether hauling traps or navigating the waters he loved so much, Bill found solace and purpose in the sea.

Beyond his work on the water, Bill embraced life with an infectious enthusiasm. Summers were spent boating on Long Lake with friends and family, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Winters brought escapes to Florida with his beloved wife, Sarah — a cherished tradition that allowed them to enjoy the white sandy beaches he adored. No matter the season, Bill was always up for an adventure: side-by-side trips through rugged trails, snowmobile rides across fresh powder, or peaceful hikes through the woods.

Bill had a deep appreciation for music and could often be found sitting in his truck jamming out to his favorite songs, lost in the moment. He also had a passion for gaming—Call of Duty Black Ops 6 Zombies being a particular favorite. His sense of humor was legendary; he had a way of making people laugh until their stomachs hurt with his one-liners. His presence lit up any room, and his unwavering determination meant he never backed down from anything life threw his way.

Above all else, Bill was devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife Sarah McKay; his children Isabella McKay, Brody McKay, and Logan McKay; and his stepchildren Chevelle Lockhart and Nova Lockhart. He also leaves behind his mother and stepfather Cindy and Dan Hersom of Kennebunk; grandparents Dick and Okeema Francoeur of Kennebunkport; great grandparents Willis and Anita McKay of Kennebunk; five sisters Amanda McKay, Savannah McKay, Lacey McKay, Stacia McKay, Danielle Hersom; and one brother Zach Hersom.

Bill was predeceased by his father William "Big Bill" McKay in 2023; his grandfather- Jimmy Stanley; and by his maternal grandparents Sal and Marlene Labrador.

His dream was to one day retire with Sarah aboard a catamaran and sail through the islands off the coast of Florida full time — a vision that reflected both his adventurous heart and love for the ocean. Though that dream remains unfulfilled in this world, those who knew him will carry forward his spirit of fearlessness, kindness, joy and humor.

Bill was loved by many and will always be remembered for the hero he was. He would always say "We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time." May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

A celebration of life date and location is to be determined - and a separate notice will be published.
