John W. Steere Jr., 78, of Smithfield, RI, passed away after a long and fulfilling life. Born in Providence, RI, on June 11, 1946, John spent the last 40 years of his life in Smithfield, where he was known for his sense of humor, intelligence, and dedication to both his work and family. John was a decorated veteran of the United States Army, serving in Vietnam in the late 1960's, bravely earning two Purple Hearts during his service to his country.
A skilled engineer, John spent his career contributing to projects that interested and challenged him. His passion for problem-solving and his ability to connect with others made him a respected figure in his field. Until his passing, he mentored Civil Engineering students at the University of RI, passing on his knowledge to the future generation of engineers.
He also spent many years dedicated to his volunteer work with the Urban Search and Rescue and the Smithfield Planning Board.
Above all, John’s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Alison Steere of East Greenwich; his son, Thomas Steere, and daughter-in-law, Ashley Steere, of Warwick; and son, Luis Steere, and daughter-in-law, Christina Steere, of Pawtucket. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Eliza (Steere) Zulli, of Newark, DE.
John had a variety of interests outside of engineering, including reading, sports, dark beer, and spending time outdoors. He loved sharing these passions with his loved ones, and his legacy of warmth, humor, and quiet strength will remain with all who knew him.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate John’s life during visitation on Monday, February 24, 2025, from 4-7 PM at the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the URI College of Engineering in his memory.
John will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones forever.
