Salem

Charles L. Chaurette, Jr., 75, a well-known and respected educational administrator from Salem, passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Thursday, February 13, 2025, following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Mary Lou (Sweeney) Chaurette, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Salem, Charles was the son of the late Charles L. Sr. and Beatrice (Tremblay) Chaurette. Known to many as Charlie, he earned his bachelor’s degree in French from Assumption College (now University), followed by a master’s in educationfrom Salem State University and Doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His career in education began at Salem High School, where he taught French. He then became the Principal of Middle School East in Salem, and after its closure, served as Co-Principal of Collins Middle School. He later became an Assistant Superintendent for Salem Public Schools. His career took him beyond Salem when he served as Superintendent of Amesbury Public Schools and as interim Director of Human Resources for Peabody Public Schools.
Charlie married Mary Lou in 1973 and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and mentor to many, both teachers and students. He had a deep passion for traveling, cheering on Boston’s sports teams, enjoying live music, playing golf, and cherishing moments with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their four children: Michelle C. McKenna and husband Dara of Derry, NH; Scott M. Chaurette and wife Joanna of Mansfield, CT; Aimee N. Chaurette of Salem; and Kimberly C. Rutter and husband Alec of Biddeford, ME. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Remy, Charlotte, Nathan, Penny, and Cole. Charlie was predeceased by his sister, Denise Riley.
Relatives and friends are invited to his calling hours on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. (Route 114 / 1-A), Salem. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 22nd at 11:00 AM at Ste. Anne Church, 290 Jefferson Ave., Salem. Burial will be private.
