John S. O’Connor, 67, formerly of Worcester, died Wednesday, February 12th with family at his side, at his home in Hobe Sound, FL. He is survived by his two sons, John S. O’Connor and his wife, Nina of Loxahatchee, FL, and Andrew J. O’Connor and his partner, Kelly Juan of La Mesa, CA; his daughter, Megan R. O’Connor of Greensburg, PA. John was the loving Pop-Pop to John Stephen III, Owen, Olivia and Liam O’Connor. He also leaves his brother, Francis J. O’Connor, Jr. of Westborough and his sister, Suzanne M. Donahue of Needham and several nephews and nieces; two grand nephews and two grand nieces.
John was born in Worcester, the son of Frank J. and Florence M. (Gallo) O’Connor and had resided in South Florida for many years. He was raised in Worcester and attended the former Shepard Knapp School and was a graduate of Worcester Academy where he had served as class president. He then graduated from Florida Atlantic University. John later graduated from Mt. Ida College’s New England School of Mortuary Sciences in Newton, MA. After graduation, John became a Licensed Funeral Director at the family business, O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home in Worcester.
He will be remembered as a baseball standout during his high school years. John’s love for golf and tennis were well known, enjoying many long-time friendships developed over the years. He was an accomplished storyteller, his eyes twinkling as his stories were shared. His Catholic faith was important to him as was his Irish heritage. John’s love of family was indelible; he delighted in reminiscing of the “good old days.” His memory was remarkable, as he often resurrected obscure details to support the stories he shared. He thrived when surrounded by family, especially his grandchildren, sharing with them his knowledge of fishing in both ocean and freshwater settings. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services were held in Florida and a Celebration of Life will be held in late spring.
