Obituary

Pauline Frey Hewett September 22, 1931 - February 5, 2025
Pauline Frey Hewett was born on September 22, 1931, to Paul and Mary Frey. Awaiting her arrival at home were older sisters: Joan and Jean. The Frey girls attended St Anthony’s elementary and high school. Growing up Pauline was fortunate to have a younger sister, Mary Jane, to go to school with because they were always the best of pals. After high school Pauline chose to become a nun and entered the Immaculate Heart Order. Pauline earned her Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Education. She taught mostly 1st grade and was loved by the children and families. She was principal at St. Mary’s School in Palmdale. In 1971 Pauline asked and received a dispensation from her vows. Pauline moved to the San Gabriel Valley and began her career teaching in public schools. During her 10 years in the Rosemead School District she taught 1st grade, her true love. Teaching 6-year-olds to read is a challenge but it was her passion, and she had the stories to prove it. Her final years in Rosemead she applied to be Staff Associate, a position of leadership working with teachers to improve their teaching skills. According to the teachers she worked with, that too was a perfect match. Her “easy going” manner and joyfulness helped make her program a success.
On August 1st of 1981 Pauline and Allan L. Hewett III married. Allan was the love of her life. Pauline married into a pre-built family, and she gained four adult children: Michael, twins Allan and Alice, and Mitchell. Pauline also inherited three grandchildren. Since her marriage to Allan, she gained an additional four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Pauline welcomed each and every one of them. She moved to Ventura after the wedding and started teaching at Our Lady of Assumption School until she retired.
Pauline was an amazing and giving person. She had a great life filled with family, friends and hundreds of students who loved her. Pauline’s love for her family and friends, her sense of humor, her caring heart will be deeply missed. Pauline was Allan’s soulmate for 31 years before his death in 2012. She was predeceased: parents Paul and Mary Frey; sisters Joan Frey Smith and Jean Denni; stepdaughter Alice Jean. She is survived by her sister Mary Jane Kay.
