STANDISH- Charles Walter Lewis, more commonly known as “Sonny”
, age 82,
passed away at Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth, Maine on February 13, 2025.
He was born in St. James, Missouri on August 20, 1942 to parents Rowena B.
(Leighton) and Charles W. Lewis.
As a kid Charles enjoyed time with his cousin Flo in God’s Country, they spent
many days outdoors playing!
He pursued the United States Navy and was very proud of his service. After the
service, he spent the majority of his working years as a truck driver. He obtained
his G.E.D. in his later years as well.
He married his wife of 61 years, Freda Ann Lewis (Dinsmore), and together they
had 2 children - Robert and Charlene.
In his free-time he was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing,
camping, hiking, motorcycles, and crafting things for his outdoor endeavors
such as; knife carving, making hiking sticks/ canes, and exploring firearms.
Throughout his life he carried a deep interest in music. He loved to dance and
did many contests with his dance partner Shirley Brannigan (Maguire). He also
played the steel guitar and appeared on a variety show.
He is preceded in death by his parents- Charles Westfield Lewis and Rowena
Brown (Leighton) Lewis, and his daughter-in-law- Elsonia Lewis.
His memory lives on in his wife- Freda (Dinsmore) Lewis, his children- Robert J.
Lewis, Charlene M. O’Leary and her husband Brian S. O’Leary, his siblings- Shirley
Wilkinson, and Barbara Holt, his grandchildren- Christopher Garland and his wife
Andrea, Amanda Shipman and her husband Dennis II, Devin O’Leary and
Brendan O’Leary, his great-grandchildren- Grace Shipman, and Dennis Shipman
III, and many nieces and nephews.
He will be buried privately among family at the Universalist Cemetery in
Cumberland, Maine in the spring.
