Obituary

In Loving Memory of Carol Ann Pope
August 6, 1941 – February 11, 2025
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Carol A. Pope, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. She left this world on February 11, 2025 at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering strength.
Born on August 6, 1941 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Carol married her high school sweetheart, George F. Pope, Jr. in August 1960 and started their family shortly after that. Carol was predeceased by George in 1991. Her greatest pride and joy was her family. She was a devoted mother to 4 children, a cherished grandmother to 9 grandchildren, and a loving great-grandmother to 7 great-grandchildren. Carol leaves behind her daughter Deborah (Pope) Fischer and her husband David along with their children Justin, his wife Rachel, Dylan & Travis. Daughter, Sheri (Pope) Chabot along with her children, Chelsea Gagne, Melissa and her husband Samir Fazlic, and Tyler Brooks. Son, Jeffrey Pope and his child JJ and son, Aaron Pope along with his wife Lisa (Wentworth) Pope and their children Colby and Riley. Along with her great grandchildren: Anthony, Lajla, Linnea, Aiden, Bailey, Emmett, Wyatt.
Carol dedicated her life to healing and nurturing, both within her profession and at home. As a Licensed Nursing Assistant, most of her career was spent caring for the Sisters of Holy Cross. She cared for the sisters with kindness and passion. She found her calling later in life after raising her children, however, it was more than just a career—it was a reflection of her deep compassion and selflessness to continue to care for others.
After retiring from being an LNA with the Sisters of Holy Cross, Carol moved back to Portsmouth and began her retirement with her special someone, Loyal (Wes) Wessling. A long time friend and very special man to Carol and her whole family.
One of her greatest enjoyments were spending time with her family and spending time at Wells and York beaches.
Her home was a sanctuary of warmth, wisdom, and unconditional love. No matter how busy she was, she always found time to encourage, support, and care for those around her.
She taught us the value of hard work, resilience, and kindness. Her laughter was contagious, her advice was wise, and her presence was a source of comfort. Even in the hardest of times, she remained a pillar of strength, inspiring all who knew her.
Though she is no longer with us, her love and legacy will live on in the lives she touched. We will forever cherish the lessons she taught, the memories she gifted us, and the immeasurable impact she had on our hearts.
A private celebration of her life will be held with her family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude’s Hospital, a cause that she has been very passionate about for many years.
Rest peacefully, Mom, Gram and Friend. Your hands may be still, but your love continues to heal us all.
