Mary E. O’Brien, 89

Mary E. (Mealy) O’Brien, age 89, died peacefully on Sunday, February 9, 2025 at the Villages at Willow Crossings in Mansfield. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years John P. O’Brien and is survived by her three children Deacon John (Janis) of Mansfield, Julie O’Brien (Amy Hanlon) of South Yarmouth and Maryellen O’Brien (Ken Bruetsch) of Gainesville, VA; and grandchildren Megan O’Brien, Katie O’Brien, Emily Heaney, Kevin Heaney and Melissa Heaney.
Born in Brookline, MA on September 27, 1935, she was the loving daughter of the late Matthew F. Mealy and Bertha E. (Dyer) Mealy. She was predeceased by her two brothers Dr. Robert F. Mealy and Richard J. Mealy.
Raised in Brookline, Mary lived in Norwood for 61 years, where she and John raised their three children, before she moved to Mansfield in 2024. Mary was a faithful Catholic all her life and her faith was very important to her.
When raising her family, Mary was active in supporting all of their activities, whether sports, scouting, PTA, etc. She very much enjoyed swimming and for many years frequented the Westwood High pool. Mary was also an avid reader but her most precious moments were just spending time with family whom she cherished.
Visitation will be between 9:00-11:00 A.M. on Saturday February 15th at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 330 Pratt St., Mansfield. Burial will follow at a later date at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
