WATERFORD: Donald Baker Wood, 92, of Waterford and formerly of Ledyard, died Friday, January 31, 2025 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 71 years, Carolyn F. Wood.
Donald was born in New London on January 8, 1933, the son of Harold and Catherine (Baker) Wood. He grew up in Ledyard and attended Groton schools.
After school, he served in the U.S. Army overseas in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1954. He and his wife, Carolyn settled in Ledyard where they raised their three children.
Donald worked as an auto mechanic for Valenti Auto Mall in Mystic for over 33 years dating back to time at Santin Chevrolet prior to the turnover to Bob Valenti and eventually moving to its current location.
Donald was a hard worker and enjoyed taking care of his house, working in the yard and helping others whenever possible. He was a lifelong New York Giants fan and was always ready to talk to anyone about the Giants.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, daughter Donna Shafer and her husband Thomas, son Gary Wood and his wife Christina, son Randy Wood and his wife Tonilynn as well as grandchildren Joshua, Jonathan, Jared, Lindsey, Hunter, Charley and Crystal.
He is predeceased by his parents Harold and Catherine, his sister Barbara Lastella and his nephew Ron Lastella.
Don's family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, February 15, from 11 to 1 pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. Per Donald’s wishes, there will not be a funeral. Burial will be private for the family at a later date.
