Joseph R. Memmo, age 83, of Marshfield, formerly of Mansfield, passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. He was the beloved longtime companion of Maureen Doherty.
Born in Hartford, CT on October 24, 1941, he was a loving son of the late Joseph A. and Rita L. (Baga) Memmo.
He was the devoted father of Kara M. Jackson and her husband Gary of Norton and the late Joseph A. Memmo. He was the cherished grandfather of Emma Schiffer and her husband Rob of Middleboro, Anthony Jackson of Norton, Jake Jackson of Norton, Bodhi Jackson of Norton, the late Matthew Jackson and was the great grandfather of Iva and Tate Schiffer. He was the dear brother of Lorraine McPhillips and her late husband James McPhillips of Hyde Park, Colette Sherman and her husband Paul of Readville and the late Henry Memmo. He was the former husband of Marji Memmo and is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews.
Joe grew up in the Readville neighborhood of Boston and was a graduate of Hyde Park High School. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal.
For a short time, Joseph worked for IUOE Local 4. He then became a police officer for the City of Boston and following a proud and distinctive career of twenty-seven years, he retired with the rank of detective.
Joe enjoyed being a resident of Marshfield. He had previously made his home in Mansfield, where he raised his adoring family. He enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, reading, time at the beach, gardening, feeding his feathered friends and watching both college and professional football.
Joe’s generous heart, humor, gentle nature and love for his family will be remembered by all who knew him. He will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him
His Funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend will be celebrated on Friday, February 14th at 10:00 A.M. in Saint Anne’s Church, 90 West Milton Street in Readville. Burial, along with military honors will follow at 12:45 P.M. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Visiting hours are omitted and due to limitation of three floral tributes allowed at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Joseph’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the New England Center and Home for Veterans, 17 Court Street, Boston, MA 02108 or the Home for Little Wanderers, 780 American Legion Highway, Boston, MA 02131.
