Worcester: Daniel G. Higgins, 87, passed away on January 31, 2025, at UMASS Memorial Medical Center.
He is survived by his five sons: Daniel, Michael, John, Paul, and Matthew; three daughters: Maureen, Eileen, and Kathleen; 24 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved sister, Sally Dunphy, and her husband, Edward Dunphy. He also leaves behind in-laws and friends: Haley Fredrickson, Helen Friel, Patricia and Bruce O'Connell, Sheila Friel, Jan Friel, Jeanie Krofina, and Maryrita Stambro.
Daniel was predeceased by his wives, Maureen E. (Friel) Higgins and Ann (Fredrickson) Higgins; his son, David; his daughter, Anne Margaret; and his grandson, Billy Downs.
A proud lifelong resident of Worcester, Daniel was the son of Daniel and Mary (Kelley) Higgins. He graduated from Classical High School and College of the Holy Cross. Dan served as a navigator in the U.S. Navy, with assignments in Panama and Antarctica. Dan was also an entrepreneur and business owner in the grocery industry.
He was an avid reader, a frequent patron of the Worcester Public Library, and a regular swimmer at the JCC (Jewish Community Center). A devoted Red Sox fan, Dan led a full and meaningful life and was well loved by all who knew him.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 10, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. AT OUR LADY of the ROSARY CHURCH on Fales Street, Worcester. A funeral Mass will follow at 12:00 noon at the church. Burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery.
