Laura P. Silva, 86, of Lowell, passed away peacefully at home on January 31, 2025, surrounded by the family she so deeply loved. She was the devoted wife of the late Mateus Silva, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage until his passing in 2011.
Born on November 23, 1938, in São Sebastião, Terceira, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Jose P. Silva and Maria (Paula) Silva. Terceira was where she grew up, received her education, and started her family—a role she cherished above all else.
In November 1971, just before Thanksgiving, Laura and her husband made the courageous decision to move to the United States, bringing with them her parents and their eight children in search of new opportunities. She quickly found work at Grace Shoe, but with a bustling household to care for, she chose to dedicate herself fully to her family and home. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her own children, as she became a trusted caregiver to many families in the neighborhood.
Laura was the heart of her home—literally and figuratively. The house where she spent her final days was rebuilt by her and her family, a true testament to her resilience, love, and unwavering dedication. Her hands were never idle; whether she was tending to her vibrant garden, sewing or crocheting with remarkable skill, or filling her kitchen with the aromas of home-cooked meals, she poured her love into everything she did. She treasured her friendships and found her greatest joy in time spent with her family, especially her children.
Laura is survived by her beloved children: Fernando Silva, Manuel Silva and his wife Virginia Cebrak of Dracut, Carlos Silva and his wife Robin of Lowell, Mario Silva of Lowell, Filomena Silva of Pawtucket, RI, Arnaldo Silva of Goffstown, NH, David Silva and his wife Diane of Dracut, Orlando Silva of Lowell, and Laura Pargas and her husband Stan of Hudson, NH.
She was blessed with 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored.
She also leaves behind her brother, Zeke Silva, and his wife Maria of Florida, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends, including her neighbor and caregiver, Ednalva Pereira of Lowell, and her longtime friend Manuela Pereira of Lowell.
She was predeceased by her brother, the late Jose P. Silva of Lowell, and her siblings Maria Arcençaõ and Jose, who both passed away in infancy.
You are welcome to attend her visitation on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 from 9am until 11am at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, MA. Following the visitation, her funeral Mass will take place at Saint Anthony's Church in Lowell at 12 Noon. Burial in Saint Mary Cemetery. www.mcdonoughfuneralhome.com
