Obituary

David Alfred Nickerson, 78, of Halifax, Massachusetts passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, January 27th, 2025, from complications following surgery.

Born at Brockton Hospital on July 24th, 1946, the loving son of the late Willard and Sarah (Davis) Nickerson. David was raised in Bryantville, MA. and graduated from Silver Lake Regional High School in 1964. Upon graduation he immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country for four years and rose to the rank of Sergeant.

After being honorably discharged from the military, David began his career in Law Enforcement at the Rockland Police Department Juvenile Affairs Office. He then enrolled and graduated from the Massachusetts Correctional Officers Academy in Shirley. His career as a Correctional Officer began at Walpole State Prison. After a time, he transferred to the Plymouth County House of Correction where he would serve until retirement in 2001.

David was an avid gardener, and some of his happiest hours were spent working in God's good earth. He would always grow more than was needed, and share the bounty of his harvest with friends, family, and local food pantries. He also helped oversee the Community Garden at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Hanover. A bird lover, a passion he got from his mother, he would tirelessly make sure the birds were always well fed at "Dave's Diner". When asked what he wanted for Christmas, bird seed was always on the list. He was an advocate of nature and supported conservation and protection of our environment. Being a sports fan, he supported all the local teams, except the Red Sox. He was a die-hard Yankees fan, thanks to his father, and often he would remind people of the franchise's success. Above all he loved and cherished his family.

David is survived by his beloved wife of almost 45 years, Janice (Kleinowskis) Nickerson, his daughter Laura (Nickerson) Keller and her husband Mark of Whitewood, SD., his son Matthew Nickerson and his wife Kristine of Pembroke, MA., his grandchildren Claire (Keller) Harvey and her husband Jesse, Mark Keller Jr, David Keller of Whitewood, SD., and Luke Nickerson of Pembroke, MA., his great grandchildren Jesse Harvey Jr, Matthias Harvey, Uriah Harvey, and Gideon Harvey of Whitewood, SD. He is also survived by his brother James Nickerson and his wife Nell of Morgan, UT. Preceded in death by his brothers William Nickerson of Bryantville, MA., and Richard Nickerson of Plympton, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Andrews Episcopal Church, or a charity of your choice.
