PORTER – Greta M (Wales) Locke, age 97, passed away naturally on January 26, 2025 at her home.
Greta was born in Porter, Maine on November 2, 1927, a daughter of the late Arthur and Ila (Libby) Wales.
During her 97 years of life she saw many significant events but two really impacted her. She watched her family navigate The Great Depression which influenced her to become the frugal and humble person she was. She also witnessed the horror of Pearl Harbor and the fear when that led to the U.S. entering into WWII. These were trying times for one so young but certainly made her resilient.
She loved her family homestead, Stoney Brook Farm. Her fondest memories were often told rife with tales of fun and adventure, especially with her uncle Don and many friends and cousins. This was a solid family to grow up in.
Greta graduated from Porter High School in 1945. She loved to play basketball at school but a heart murmur would mark the end of her playing. She went on to be an avid sports enthusiast watching tennis, golf, basketball and her beloved Yankees. She always spoke of the players like she knew them!
After school she went on to work at the National Bank in Kezar Falls. She married her beloved husband and went on to raise four children. In 1968 she and Myron took over Ridlons Pharmacy and ran it as the local variety store together. Later in life she also worked and retired from GTE Sylvania.
Greta loved to quilt, knit and braid rugs. Many beautiful and cherished items are held by her family. She was dedicated to her family.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband Myron who passed away in 2010
Greta is survived by her children Michael of Porter; David (Julia) of So Portland; Tracy of Gorham; Peter (Julie) of Porter: Six grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
