Obituary

STANDISH- Mary Louise Sanborn passed away on January 20th at Springbrook Center Nursing Home in Westbrook, Maine. Mary was born in Methuen, MA on July 23, 1938. She was the daughter of the late Alton Thurston and Mary (Martin) Thurston. The family moved to Saco, Maine where Mary’s childhood was marked by the death of her Father when she was 11 years old. Alton’s tragic passing affected Mary deeply for the rest of her life. Mary would eventually graduate from Thornton Academy and study at Becker College in Worcester, MA before marrying Robert B. Sanborn from Standish, Maine on September 17, 1960. Mary & Robert made their home in Standish where she worked at Standish Telephone Company and Hanold Outfitters. Eventually Robert would purchase Sebago Lake Exxon from his father where Mary served as bookkeeper at various times and was a member of the local chapter of the Jaycees. Mary and Robert had two sons, William B. Sanborn and Michael A. Sanborn who still reside in Standish.

Although her life was at times marked by health issues, she always shared great love for her family, especially her sons and eventually her grandchildren. Mary was an avid reader who enjoyed music, jigsaw puzzles, cross stitch, crochet and needlepoint. She also bowled and enjoyed bird feeding and spending time with her houseplants and in the garden. Mary loved homemaking and was an excellent cook, often utilizing her Marjorie Standish Cookbook. Her “Parker House Rolls” and “Apple Danish” were family favorites.

Mary is survived by her husband Robert Sanborn; her son William Sanborn and his wife Lynn Brown, grandchildren Morgan Sanborn, Lincoln Sanborn and wife Jordynne Copp, and her great grandson Liam Sanborn; her youngest son Michael Sanborn and his wife Diann Sanborn, grandchildren Deirdre Sanborn and Nolan Sanborn; sister Carol Brady and her husband Bob Brady; and sister Barbara Curley.
