Obituary

NOANK: Jean (Layng) Hohlfelder, 87, passed away peacefully at home with her family on January 15, 2025.

She was born in Rockford, Illinois where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Robert Hohlfelder. They moved to Groton, CT where Bob took a job at Electric Boat. Jean taught high school and college math, finishing her career at Mitchell College. She loved to help her children and grandkids with their math homework.

Jean loved to quilt and owned Sea Shore Quilt Crafts in Noank Village and has held a weekly quilting group at her house. Her hobbies included cabinetry, tile and brick work, and gardening. She enjoyed kayaking in the Sound, walking everywhere, and traveling in New England. Through the years, she loved her dogs and cats, and enjoyed feeding birds and squirrels on her porch.

She is predeceased by her husband, her parents Robert and Elanora Layng, her brother Delbert Layng, and grandson Timothy Hohlfelder.

She will be sadly missed by her children Robert (Nancy) Hohlfelder II, Cheryl (Josh) Barrett, and Eric (Monica) Hohlfelder, and her grandchildren: Josh, Nate, Ellie, Marlah, and Jonathan. She also leaves behind a sister, 2 brothers and many adoring friends.

Jean’s family will greet relatives and friends at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Downtown Mystic on Saturday, February 8, 2025 from 3 to 6pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mystic Aquarium, Mystic CT, of which she was a founding member.
