Al continued his education at the New England Institute of Anatomy and Embalming in Kenmore Square, Boston.
Al proudly served his country for 3 years in the Army National Guard and another 3 years in the Air National Guard.
At an early age, Al began working along the side of his father and uncle in the family business, Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home. Upon his graduation from New England Institute of Anatomy and Embalming Al began working as a fourth generation licensed funeral director and embalmer where he was licensed for 61 years and still had an active license until his passing. Throughout his lengthy career in funeral service, Al cared and guided countless families through some of their most difficult moments with his compassion and respect for every family he assisted. After over 45 years of working at Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, he decided to retire in December 2000. During his retirement years he kept a close eye on the business and routinely offered advice and consulting until his passing. He found great enjoyment while working for 10 years doing various jobs at the Dennis golf courses during his retirement.
Al was a lifelong member of the former Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Worcester, until it’s closing in 2008. He was also a longtime member of the former Worcester Lodge of Elks #243, where he served as a trustee and volunteered for numerous functions.
Al was known for his quick wit, mischievous jokes and sense of humor. He found immense joy in putting a smile on everyone’s face, even a stranger walking by and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He could be found chatting with everyone on his daily walks around his golf community. Al’s true passion was playing golf. He thoroughly enjoyed the game even more after retirement when he was able to golf year-round on Cape Cod in the summer and in Florida during the winter. He deeply loved his golf community friends and will forever be remembered fondly as the “Mayor of Southport”.
Al is deeply loved and will be missed by many.
