Ronald E. "Ronnie" Thomas, 85, passed away peacefully at his home on January 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Joan Thomas, with whom he would have celebrated 63 years of marriage this July.
Born on July 31, 1939, in Bangor, Maine, Ronald was the son of the late Dorothy (Ross) McIntosh. He grew up in Bangor, where he received his education before relocating to Tewksbury, Massachusetts, as a young adult to pursue work opportunities.
Ronnie began his career at Tewksbury State Hospital as an orderly before transitioning to the maintenance department. During this time, he furthered his education at Newbury College, earning a degree in accounting. His dedication and determination led him to the hospital’s accounting department, where he worked until his retirement. Additionally, Ronald worked at H&R Block for many years during tax season, showcasing his expertise and commitment to his community.
It was at Tewksbury State Hospital that Ronald met the love of his life, Joan, who worked there as a nurse. Their story began with serendipitous meetings, thanks to Joan’s efforts to cross his path. Their love blossomed into a beautiful partnership that spanned decades.
Ronnie had a passion for staying active and could often be found on his beloved treadmill, walking at least an hour every day. He also enjoyed solving puzzles, spending time in his garden, and caring for his yard. He cherished trips to the casino, playing Keno, and, above all, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Joan, of Tewksbury, and their three daughters: Rhonda Johnson and her husband Ken of Merrimack, NH; Debra Francis and her husband Tim of Billerica; and Paula Arsenault and her husband Neldy of Leominster. He also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren: Ashley DiOrio and her husband Nick of Merrimack, NH; Nick Johnson of Merrimack; Megan Francis; Sophia Arsenault; and Tony Francis, as well as two great-granddaughters, Stella and Emmy. He is survived by his brother in law, Edward Lane of Andover and his sister in law, Mary Masse of Hampton Falls, NH and many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his siblings: Betty Lounsbury of Winslow, ME; Rhea Thomas and his wife Rosetta of Kenduskeag, ME; Georgia Southard of Brewer, ME; and Dwight “Skip” McIntosh of Bangor, ME. Ronald was predeceased by his siblings William Thomas, Barbara O’Connor, Marlene Severance, and Jayne McRoy.
