Von W. Orton, 92

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Von W. Orton, age 92, of Mansfield, passed away in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loved one’s on Monday, January 13, 2025. He was the beloved husband of the late Joyce T. (Tinney) Orton, to whom he was wed for sixty-one years at the time of her death on April 16, 2020.

Born in Yonkers, New York on June 1, 1932, he was a loving son of the late Paul L. Orton and Eugenia (Darling) Ralph.

Von grew up in town and was a 1951 graduate of Mansfield High School. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army and continued his education, graduating from UMass in Amherst. Mr. Orton was a lifelong educator ranging from the classroom to developing curriculum.

An active member of the Mansfield Congregational Church, where he served on numerous committees throughout the years, Von truly treasured times spent with his adoring family. Following retirement, he and his late wife Joyce traveled extensively in the United States and abroad and his hobbies included painting portraits and landscapes. When younger, Von enjoyed playing tennis, sailing and camping but his greatest joy in life was always his grandchildren.

He is survived by his devoted children, David V. Orton of Westford, Scott D. Orton of Attleboro, Janine M. Phillips of Mansfield and the late Brett M. Orton and Todd W. Orton. He was the cherished grandfather of Kassandra, Helen, Tyler, Hannah, Connor and Colin. He was the dear brother of Susan Rosenbaum and her husband Andy of Chicago, Illinois and the loving uncle of Joshua and Rebecca.

Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday, January 21st from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.

Burial will be held privately at a later date at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.

In lieu of flowers, Von’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Mansfield Food Pantry, 15 West Street, Mansfield, MA 02048.
