TAMWORTH ---- Stephen Allan Holden, 86, of Bryant Road, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.
Stephen was born on July 26, 1938, in Brattleboro, VT, the son of Justin and Ruth (Davis) Holden. He graduated from Brattleboro Union High School in 1956, and Norwich University, Northfield, VT, in 1960. He married Cecile Clarke, of Brattleboro. They moved to Westpoint, KY, when he entered the Army in 1961 and served two years at Fort Knox with USATC Armor. They resided in Danville and St. Albans, VT, Goffstown, and Marlow, NH, following his work, then Alstead when they purchased the Village Store in 1971. After two years that store was sold and they purchased the Old Country Store in Moultonborough, NH, established in 1781, which he ran with his wife until shortly before he passed. He spent many years as a volunteer fireman and served on several boards over the years. They moved to Tamworth in 1989.
Steve leaves his wife, Cecile, and three children, Jerome and wife Jeannette D’Onofrio, of Wolfeboro, NH, Jo Hayden and husband Jonathan, of Moultonborough, NH, and Laurie Holden, of Ashland, NH, grandchildren Anthony Clifford and Stephanie Thompson, of Ashland, NH, Matthew Hayden and wife Andrea, of Sandwich, NH, and Amanda Hayden Cavaliero and husband Zachary, of Cranberry Township, PA, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Steve was predeceased by his brother Orman Holden and sister Lydia Faxon.
There will be a private family burial in the spring on his land in Tamworth.
