Raymond E. Brow, 81, of Portsmouth, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children and family on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Franklin E. and Alice G. (Rose) Brow.
Mr. Brow was born in Fall River, and had been a longtime resident of Portsmouth. He grew up in Tiverton where his family owned and ran Gray’s Ice Cream. He attended Nonquit School and Durfee High School.
As a young man, Raymond followed in the footsteps of his father and brothers, learning the trade of commercial fishing in the waters off the coast of New England. During his career, which spanned more than 60 years, Raymond was known for his expertise in both deep-sea and inshore fishing, specializing in cod, quahog, swordfish, and lobster, among other species. His vessels became a familiar sight on the docks of New Bedford and Narragansett Bay. In his later years he built and repaired fishing nets with his brother and best friend, Roger.
Survivors include his son: Chad Brow and his wife, Joan, and their children Mary, Rose, Thomas, Jonathan, Jacob, and Jude of Westport; his daughter: Audrey Brow and her son, Jebidiah of New Bedford; his brother, Roger Brow of Little Compton.
