PORTLAND- Peter M. Gavel, a devoted husband, father, and proud patriot, passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2025, at the age of 63, after a courageous four-year battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Nancy, and daughter, Katherine, in his final moments.
Peter was a man of many passions. An avid Harley-Davidson enthusiast, he lived life with the same free spirit and adventurous heart that defined his love for motorcycles. His career spanned more than three decades in the auto parts industry, where he specialized in automotive paint, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and customers alike.
Known for his love of bourbon, Peter was a certified Bourbon steward and even adopted a dog named after the spirit. He was a man who enjoyed life's simple pleasures—whether it was hunting in the great outdoors, cheering on the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins, or appreciating live music. His love for Chevy trucks and firearms reflected his unyielding passion for craftsmanship and precision.
Peter’s love for God, country, and his fellow veterans was unwavering. A proud Army veteran, he was a fierce patriot who wore his love for America on his sleeve. His service and commitment to his country were fundamental to the man he was—a man who believed in hard work and integrity.
Peter's love story with his wife, Nancy, began long before they ever said "I do." The two met at the age of 4 in Sunday School, a bond that would grow stronger over time. Though they dated off and on through their teens, it was after Peter left the Army in 1982 that their paths crossed again. Their reunion sparked a love that would last a lifetime, and they were married in 1984. In May of 2024, they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, a testament to their solid bond.
Peter was predeceased by his son, James, who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident in 2009. While Peter and James were very different people, they shared a deep, unbreakable bond through their mutual love for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. James’ memory remained with Peter, and his loss shaped him in ways words cannot express. His father, Lee, who passed in 2011, also left an indelible mark on Peter's life, and was deeply missed by his eldest son.
Peter is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Katherine; his mother, Karen; his brothers, Paul & Matthew; his sister, Kari; as well as his many nieces and nephews. He was a cherished family member and a friend to many, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
He will be remembered not only for his loyalty and generosity but for his zest for life, his pride in his heritage, his unshakeable spirit and his run-on stories. Peter’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to call him family and a friend.
