Lavelle DeLoach "Deedy" Fitzgerald, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, at the age of 98 in Dublin, GA. Born on December 24, 1926, in Hagan, GA, she was a daughter to the late Lattie Eugene DeLoach and Lilla Myrtice Knight Jones. Deedy was the cherished wife of the late Mack Fitzgerald, with whom she shared a remarkable 74 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her son, Harry McKenzie Fitzgerald as well as five siblings.
Deedy's legacy continues through her devoted daughters, Anne F. Nelms (David), Nancy F. Yeager (Barry), both of Fitzgerald, and Carol F. Stroberg (Chuck) of Dublin. She was a proud grandmother to Dawn W. Parker, Leslie N. Drury (Darin), Paige N. Pruitt (Jason), Stan Walker (Heather), Brooke S. Hobbs (Tommy), Deedy S. Murray (Sloan), Anna Y. Lacey (Brett), and Eleanor Y. Roath (Kyle). Her joy was multiplied by the presence of many great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will all hold her memory dear.
Deedy's journey in healthcare began at the Georgia Baptist Hospital Nursing Corps Program, culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgia College. Her career was marked by compassion and dedication as she served as a Licensed Practical Nurse before becoming a Registered Nurse. She eventually took on the role of Director of Nursing at several nursing homes, where her guidance and expertise were invaluable. She later retired from the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center after many years of dedicated service.
A woman of deep faith, Deedy was a long-standing member of the First Baptist Church of Dublin, where she found great solace and joy in her church family. Her commitment to her faith was evident in the way she lived her life, bringing many family and friends to Christ through her example.
Deedy's passions extended beyond her professional and spiritual life. She was an exceptional cook, known for her culinary skills that brought comfort and joy to many gatherings. Her love for daylilies was more than a hobby; it was a testament to her appreciation for beauty and growth, mirroring the way she nurtured those around her.
Those who knew Deedy would describe her as loving, faith-filled, and kind. Her gentle presence and warm smile were a source of strength and inspiration to her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness extended beyond her immediate circle, touching the lives of many through her work and her unwavering support of her loved ones.
A funeral service celebrating Mrs. Fitzgerald’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at First Baptist Church. Dr. Darrell Paulk and Dr. Cliff Morris will officiate. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the service hour at the church. Burial will be held at 3:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery in Fitzgerald, GA.
Pallbearers will be Stan Walker, Jason Pruitt, Darin Drury, Sloan Murray, Tommy Hobbs, and Brett Lacey.
