James Walter Bivens

James Walter Bivens passed away peacefully on January 1st, 2025, surrounded by his loving family in Anderson, Indiana.
Known to most as Walt or ‘Biv,’ he was born in Sweetwater, Tennessee, on December 23rd, 1946, to Paul and Neda Bivens. In 1966, graduated from Anderson High School and married his high school sweetheart, Marie.
Walt served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, receiving a Purple Heart in 1967.
He worked for 46-years with Central Indiana Gas Company, awarded for his commitment to co-worker and customer safety. He served as Secretary for United Steelworkers Local 12213.
An avid gardener, he always shared his harvest with neighbors. He enjoyed fishing with family and ensuring no one left his home without candies or vegetables. His banana pudding became a beloved staple at every holiday gathering. His boots were always meticulously clean and shiny.
Walt is survived by his wife Marie; children Michelle (Joe) Payton, James 'Jim' (Alesha) Bivens Jr., and M. Shane (Tam) Bivens; grandchildren Natasha, Chad (Kim), Blake, Josh, Thomas, Seth, and Ashton; and great-grandchildren Wade, Emma, Kalvin, Cash, Hazel, and Lily; Siblings Patsy, Deanie (Tommy), Paul, Rachel (Joe.)
Services: 2:00PM Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, Anderson with Pastor Todd Edeker officiating. Burial will follow in Richland Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-2pm at the funeral home.
