Eugene A. Varley of Needham and North Eastham died on Sunday August 6, 2006 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham. He was 90 years old. Mr. Varley was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. He served with the 464th Fighter Squadron. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. After completing his service to his country in 1946, Eugene was owner and operator of the family business, E.J. Varley Trucking Company in Roslindale until 1974. He moved to Needham in 1947 and was a member of the Lt. Manson H. Carter VFW Post 2498 in Needham. Mr. Varley worked as a custodian for the Town of Needham for 10 years. He enjoyed many summers at the cottage that he built in North Eastham. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary (MacGillivray) and the loving father of Kathryn M. Griffith, Barbara J. Varley both of Needham, Eugene J. Varley of Holliston, James R. Varley of Wilmington, OH and Mary E. Douglas of Ventura, CA. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral services at the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Wed. August 9th at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 3-7 PM. Interment Mt. Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury.
