With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear mother, Alice Alicia (Worth) Wood on December 30, 2024, at the age of 86. Following a courageous battle with Myasthenia Gravis, she passed peacefully at her home in Dedham surrounded by loved ones.
Born in 1938 to Alice (Bennett) and Arnold Worth, Alice grew up in Watertown, and then Dedham, MA. She graduated from Dedham High School, Westbrook Junior College, and Waltham Hospital School of nursing and enjoyed a long career caring for patients at Dana Faber, Children’s Hospital, Heathwood Nursing Home, and the Walpole VNA. She was married to the late Sidney B. Wood for 54 years, and together they welcomed four children. Alice is survived by her children- Kathleen D. Black and her husband Charles, Thomas B. Wood and his wife Shawn, Susan A. and her husband Peter James, and David A. Wood and his wife Sharon. Alice and her husband Sidney were also blessed with 13 grandchildren, including the late Jeremy E. Black. Alice welcomed her first great grandchild, Jackson Thomas Wood in July. Alice also leaves behind two nieces and sister-in-law Cynthia Wood, the wife of the late Robert A. Wood. She was also predeceased by brother-in-law Steven N. Wood. Alice also treasured her dear childhood friend Janice Thresher of Vermont.
Alice lived a life of Christian service, dedicating herself to raising her children, spending time with her grandchildren, and serving her community. She retired from Dedham to Westport, MA where she enjoyed the beauty of nature, whether sitting on her porch or dock, admiring her gardens, or spending time at the beach feeding the seagulls. She loved going for boat rides up and down the East Branch River and fishing with grandchildren, as well as boating to Cuttyhunk Island. While her family was everything, her life was punctuated by attending many sporting events. It didn’t matter whether it was youth soccer or the Boston Bruins, she was the most ardent fan.
Alice’s family extended into the community as a longtime member of the Westport Point Methodist Church. She was passionate about ministering to the homeless of New Bedford, even in her last days, knitting hats for care packages. While she volunteered with many organizations throughout her life, she had a special place in her heart for Mobile Ministries and the Ronald McDonald House. She was an active member of the Westport Council on Aging, laughing and socializing with new old friends, and volunteering as a senior companion for the aging. An avid reader, Alice was also an active member of the Westport Book Club, and when no longer able, her cousin Bruce would fetch new titles from the Westport Library and drop in for a visit with her favorite sweets. She cherished her Westport neighbors and was grateful for every blessing God bestowed over her long life.
Friends and relatives are invited to a Funeral Service at the Westport Point United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 6, 2025. Interment to follow at Beech Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westport Point Methodist Church, Mobile Ministries, or the Westport Council on Aging.
