THOMPSON, CT- Robert J. ”Bob” Meagher, Sr., 89, passed away December 30,2024, just 5 days after the death of his wife of 66 years, Joan M. Meagher, in Webster Manor, Webster, MA.
He leaves his daughter, Cheryl St.Onge and husband Paul “Nate” of Southbridge, MA; his son, Robert J. Meagher, Jr. and significant other, Karen Miller of Durango, CO; a grandson, Matthew St.Onge and wife Ina of Falmouth, ME; a granddaughter, Danielle Boley and husband James of Glastonbury, CT ; four great grandchildren, Elliot and Ben St.Onge, and Carter and Norah Boley; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his son Scott A. Meagher in 2005, by his brother Thomas Meagher, Jr. in 2018 and most recently by his wife on Christmas Day, 2024.
He was born on April 12, 1935 in Webster, a son of Thomas F. Meagher, Sr. and Margaret (Canty) Meagher and was a life-long resident of the Thompson, Webster and Dudley area. He graduated from St. Louis High School in 1953 where he was the class president and a gifted athlete, excelling in baseball and basketball. He even received an invitation to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals professional baseball team.
After graduation, he put off college to enlist in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean War. Returning home three years later, he continued to serve his country in the Army National Guard.
He spent many years as a land surveyor while attending college, earning a bachelor degree in business administration from Nichols College and a masters degree in education at UCONN. He fulfilled his long-time dream of becoming a school teacher and spent the next 20 years teaching English and Social Studies at the Thompson Middle School. He coached both boys and girls soccer, as well as girls basketball and softball. He was loved by his students.
Bob loved spending time with his family camping in the White Mountains and on Ossipee Lake, going to the beaches of Rhode Island and looked forward to his favorite vacation in Aruba. He enjoyed all sports, but, in particular, he was a die-hard Boston Bruins fan. He loved all of his family pets and was quite the chef.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 from Scanlon Funeral Sevice, 38 East Main Street, Webster, MA with a Mass dedicated to both him and his wife Joan at 11:00 AM in Saint Louis Church, 14 Lake Street. They will both be buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Webster, MA with military honors provided by the Webster-Dudley Veterans Council. Visitation for both Robert and Joan will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 AM Saturday in the funeral home before Mass. Donations in his name may be made to the MSCPA, 350 South Huntington, Boston, MA 01230.
