Charles E. Coldwell
Former Lowell Pharmacist and Public Servant
Charles E. “Charlie” Coldwell, age 89, of Tewksbury, formerly of Lowell, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Tewksbury Hospital on Saturday, December 28, 2024.
He was the beloved husband of former Tewksbury Hospital Nursing Supervisor, Priscilla M. (Boland) Coldwell, R.N., who passed away on February 14, 1991.
Born in Lowell on January 23, 1935, he was the only son of the late Charles J. Coldwell and the late Margarette (DePaulis) Coldwell.
Charlie was raised in Lowell and graduated from the former Keith Academy in 1953, where he was a member of the varsity football and baseball teams.
Following high school, he attended Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, where he earned his PharmD. He later attended the University of Lowell (UMass-Lowell), where he earned a Master’s Degree in Education and a second Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
Prior to his retirement, he served as a pharmacist and as director of pharmacy at the Lowell General Hospital for 38 years.
A proud public servant, Charlie served on the Tewksbury Board of Selectman for 21 years and was chairman of the board for many of those years. In addition, he was a 12-year member of the Tewksbury Board of Health, and Board Member Lowell Transit Authority.
Charlie was an avid sports fan. His favorite team was the Boston Red Sox with the Boston Bruins being a close second. He loved to share stories of his childhood growing up on Chapel Street in Lowell. Another past time he enjoyed was racing pigeons with his father as a young man.
Charlie’s family extends a heartfelt thank you to the physicians, nurses and staff at Tewksbury Hospital for the exceptional and loving care provided to their father especially the staff on E2. The family would also like to recognize Charlie’s home health aide, Arlene, who became like family over the last few years.
Charlie is survived by six daughters, Margaret E. Coldwell of North Conway, NH, Cynthia Ferrick and her husband Michael, of Seabrook, NH, Paula Coldwell, of Lowell, Colleen P. Crear and her husband David, of Chelmsford, Jennifer L. Paolilli and her husband John, of Hampstead, NH, and Stephanie B. Kinnon and her husband John, of Tewksbury: twenty two grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren, many extended family members, friends, colleagues and associates.
Calling hours are Sunday, Jan. 5, from 4-8 p.m., at Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral procession will begin on Monday, Jan. 6, at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St., Tewksbury. Services will conclude at St. Mary Cemetery, 90 River Rd., Tewksbury.
