Obituary

WEBSTER – Hipolito “Moncho” Velez, 72, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2024 in Holy Trinity Rehab, Worcester surrounded by those who loved him dearly. Moncho was a God fearing man with unwavering faith. He was cherished by all who knew him. Best known for his generosity and his “family above all else” attitude. He stood on strong morals and fostered them in all his children and those he helped raise. A common phrase associated with him was “he’s like a father to me”. When he wasn’t working, he could be found on a ball field playing, teaching or mentoring while simultaneously instilling the Word of God in all those he touched.

He is survived by his 6 children, Peter Marrero, Trinidad Gomez, Elizabeth “Becky” Guzman Cristina Velez, Milagro ‘Antonia” Perez, and Emanuel Velez; his mother, Maria Antonia Caban Soto; 6 grandchildren, Isaiah, Zion, Lilliana, Zachariah, Evangelina and Elliana; 11 siblings, Carmen, Estrella, Nelson, Virginia, Jose Luiz, Wilson, Iris, Lissette, Maria, Judy, and Randy. He was preceded in death by his brother Monserrate Velez.

He was born on May 7, 1952 in Maricao, Puerto Rico, a son of Hipolito Velez and moved to Webster in 1969. He lived in the Webster-Dudley area up until the time of his illness.

Mr. Velez first worked for 21 years at the Cranston Print Works, Company in Webster and later as a truck driver and also drove truck for the construction industry. He retired in 2021.

A funeral service will take place on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM in Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main Street. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Dudley. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 2 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to Holy Trinity Activities Fund, 300 Barber Avenue, Worcester, MA 01606.
